About the Program

The Khbrat Program is a professional training program designed for transforming careers in education. The program offers practical, hands-on experiences and skills for teachers and educators; and it encourages thinking about possible strategies and practices for reflecting on the Saudi context of education. Upon program completion, participants are agents of change and improvement deploying skills and experiences gained through immersing in the American K-12 school system. Khbrat is a one-year full-time program (12 months) starting in July and divided into four phases:

Phase One: English Language Skills and Development

The first six months of the program focuses on developing participants’ competencies in the English language. This critical phase helps participants make the most of the program through school immersion, as well as the capstone project writing. After a placement test, participants are divided into the appropriate levels of our ELP courses. The English language development phase offers courses in all relevant skills including: Academic Writing, Grammar, Pronunciation, Reading and Vocabulary, and Speaking. This phase is supplemented by ECP (English Conversation Partner) sessions, which give participants opportunities to interact with American students from the Honors Program.

Phase Two: Technical Knowledge and Skills

Upon completing the English language skills and development phase, participants are offered intensive sessions on a range of relevant topics, all designed to broaden participants’ technical knowledge regarding contemporary educational topics. This one-month phase offers topics on teaching methodologies, educational leadership, and educational technologies and platforms. It also offers opportunities for further participation in seminars, workshops and conferences in education.

Phase Three: Immersion and School and Teacher Shadowing

In this phase, participants are assigned to K-12 schools in Etiwanda and San Bernardino school districts. This duration of this phase is five months—from February to June. Participants will work 30 hours a week with a host teacher, shadowing his/her work and providing assistance. Immersion for this phase consists of (1) inside classroom activities (involving participants with teaching, preparing lesson plans, evaluating students, and getting involved in a number of relevant activities); and (2) out of classroom activities (engaging participants in the cafeteria system, transportation system, school safety, administration and library functions).

Phase Four: Final Capstone Project

The final phase of the program consists of 10 hours per week through the immersion phase. By the end of this phase, participants are required to submit a research project. The capstone project is an action research in which participants investigate educational issues studied during the program and reflect on the results of their classroom practices on their return back to Saudi Arabia. The capstone project is underpinned by the philosophy of immersion and reflective learning, thus enabling participants to act as leaders of change to improve the educational process in Saudi Arabia. The capstone project offers educational improvement by helping participants learn ideas and best practices in the US, and share them with colleagues back home. The capstone project is a piece of original work written under the supervision of a research advisor and mentor. At the end of the program, participants present results and recommendations from their capstone projects in a University conference.
