International Education Week 2024

International Education Week is sponsored by the US Department of State and the US Department of Education as an opportunity to focus on expanding horizons, making connections, and establishing understanding between people in the US and other countries.

Monday 11/18

12:00 - 1:00 p.m. “Financial Aid and Scholarships for Study Abroad” For students

Representatives from the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and the Writing Center along with past study abroad students and study abroad scholarship recipients will be on hand to answer your questions about financing and scholarship options and how to apply for funding to support your international education experience.

7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Keynote Address by Dr. Armin Schwegler, "Language, Globalization, and the Rapid Reshaping of Local Identities in an Afro-Hispanic Community

This lecture will focus on the Afro-Colombian village of El Palenque de San Basilio, Colombia, where some 400 years ago run-away slaves escaped from Cartagena de Indias to obtain their freedom. There they have lived in isolation for centuries, safeguarding their own Afro-American customs and local creole language known as “Lengua” (‘tongue’). Sponsored by Phi Beta Delta.

Join guests and representatives of the US Department of Education for a moderated panel discussion into current topics and emerging trends in international education. Panelists and will share their perspectives on international education from their respective roles spanning many areas of international education including study abroad, foreign language learning, international education research, government-funded programs, and beyond

Learn about opportunities for faculty and staff to fund their internationalization interests. Signature Study Abroad Program proposals are due by 1 February and provide professional development funding or a stipend in the amount of $2000 per person to collaborate on developing and offering a sustainable study abroad program. The International Speaker Series is also currently accepting applications to fund a visiting scholar, due by 1 December.

Grab your advising passport and learn about the education abroad opportunities available to CSUSB students. Speak with representatives of the Study Abroad Office, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Academic Advising, the World Languages and Literatures Department, and more to find the right program for you and make a plan for study abroad to be a part of your educational journey. Collect all six advising “visa stamps” and receive free pizza, digital photos for your online passport application, and your chance to win an $150 application or registration fee waiver for a CSUSB study abroad program.

Are you interested in a short-term study abroad program for summer 2025? There are seven CSUSB-led programs to choose from, each led by our very own faculty and staff and designed to maximize your experience for minimal cost. Come learn about them all! Each program will have just five minutes to tell you about what’s in store for participating students. Programs are available in the United Kingdom, Thailand, Japan, the Czech Republic, Malawi, and Italy.

CSUSB is the recipient of a 2024/2025 IIE Passport Grant, which provides funding for students to apply for their first US passport. Join us for the winners’ receipt of an award certificate.
