Issues You can Fix and those You Can't

Issues You Can Fix

Images

  • Simple images – if there is text in the image use those words as the alt text
  • Complex images – place a small description in the alt text AND place the information in the image above, below or next to the image.  Do not exceed 150 character
  • Decorative images – Drupal does not allow you to code those images to be ignored by screen reading users.  Minimize use or do not use decorative images
  • Do not use the word "image", "photo", "picture", etc. or extensions (.jpeg’s, .jpg, etc.) in the alt text

Color

  • When using color for flyers and images check your work with the Color Contrast Analyzer and confirm that the colors pass accessibility standards

Heading

  • Headings should be used for structure not formatting.  Do NOT use headings for images, paragraphs, links or to format text.

Links

  • Make sure the link describes where the link goes
  • Do not use the URL as the link text
  • Do not use, here, click here, more, more info, read more
  • Avoid links with the same name that point to different locations.

Broken Links

  • When adding a link in Drupal, navigate to the web page and copy the link from the browser
    • Web Accessibility can run a quick check for you to see if your links are good

Multimedia

  • Make sure you have captions (NOT autogen captions)
  • Make sure you have audio descriptions
  • Is all the information on the video communicated
  • Is there rapid movement
  • Is there music playing, if so you must have an audio description of information

Issues You Can't Fix

  • Web Forms
  • Drupal Banners
  • Drupal Headers & Footers
