Discovery Mentorship Program

Program Description 

The Discovery Mentorship Program is a comprehensive mentoring initiative designed to introduce and engage first-time freshman/first-time transfer students in the exciting world of research. The program will begin during the fall and offer a structured approach to instill the importance of research in the undergraduate experience. 

The program offers a transformative experience that introduces students to the world of research and equips them with the tools and connections necessary for a successful and fulfilling academic journey. Through workshops, mentorship, and social events, participants will be empowered to navigate the research landscape and contribute meaningfully to their chosen fields.

Students selected to participate will receive the following: 

  • $500 in coyote cash
  • Certificate of Completion 
  • T-shirt

Eligibility 

To participate in the program, you must meet the following criteria: 

  • In good academic standing
  • Open to all grade levels and majors
  • Priority to freshman/transfer students
  • Be curious about research!
  • Little to no experience in research previously 

Program Obligations

  • Workshops: Participants must attend workshops throughout the fall and spring semesters. These workshops are carefully curated to cover essential aspects of research. Some of the workshops include the following: 
    • Getting Involved in Research
    • Finding a Faculty Mentor
    • Meeting of the Minds
    • Career Exploration and Academic Planning
    • Pre and Post Graduate Research Opportunities
    • Understanding Internal and External Fellowship Opportunities
  • Social Events: To enhance networking and community building, participants will attend two social events, providing opportunities to interact with fellow students, faculty mentors, and other professionals in the research community.
  • Meeting of the Minds Participation: Participants will be encouraged to actively contribute to the academic community by participating in the 14th Annual 'Meeting of the Minds' Student Research Symposium event and showcasing their research interests and experiences.
  • Academic Planning: The program culminates in developing an academic plan tailored to each participant's research interests, career goals, and aspirations for graduate school. This personalized plan will guide students in structuring their future engagement in research.
