How the Student Health Center Supports Student Health & Safety

Leading the charge of student health and wellness is CSUSB’s Student Health Center (SHC). We reached out to our colleagues in the SHC to learn more about how they support student success.

Q: "Can you tell us a little about the Student Health Center?"

"The Student Health Center supports students’ academic success by providing high-quality, affordable, and confidential medical care. Our clinic offers various primary care services, including outpatient care for illnesses, minor injuries, psychiatry, and health education. Enrolled students pay a health services fee which allows them to see any provider for no co-pay. The Student Health Center also collaborates with Senior County Public Health Officials to stay informed of existing and new disease trend and ways to prevent and reduce the spread of disease as well as to keep the campus community informed."

Q: "Why should students consider visiting the SHC?"

"Students can visit the Student Health Center on both the San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses for many health needs and concerns. Some examples include cough and flu care, skin conditions, first aid, and TB tests. Many students also utilize our reproductive health services, such as accessing contraceptives, routine STI screenings and treatment, and pelvic exams. The Student Health Center provides in-person as well as telehealth appointments (via Zoom or phone). However, students do not have to wait for a health concern to benefit from the Student Health Center health and wellness services. We offer health education services, such as one-on-one appointments, health and wellness presentations, and events focusing on several health topics, such as reproductive health, mental health, physical health, and alcohol and other substances education."

Q: "How can faculty, staff, or supervisors of student employees partner with the SHC to help promote SHC services to students?"

"The CSUSB community can partner with our clinic in several ways. We’ve often collaborated with campus departments and student groups to tailor outreach events for their specific population needs. Previous collaborations have included Orientation and First Year Experience, the College of Natural Sciences, and Housing and Residential Life. This allows us to serve specific groups of students while educating them on our services. We pride ourselves on long-standing relationships with several campus partners and welcome the invitation to work with new departments and student groups. For students who are interested in helping the SHC chart the way for new services/program, we encourage students to join the Student Health Advisory Committee."

Q: "Students are almost halfway through the Fall term, what are some upcoming events, workshops, and or reminders that students should be aware of?"

"Our department will be offering several critical programs during the Fall Semester. One of our significant standing events is the annual Flu Vaccine Clinic, where our clinic mobilizes on campus to allow students to get their free flu shots quickly. We will also have the Health Promotion Department leading several presentations, including “Imposter Syndrome: Dealing with it as a First Gen Student.” and “How To Be an LGBTQ Ally” training. To view all the details of our upcoming event, students should view our events on the Student Health Center website, follow us on Instagram at @CSUSB_PHE, or check for emails from healthpromotion@csusb.edu. Students, faculty, or staff can also be added to our Health Promotion Newsletter, Health Hub, for up-to-date health information and health and wellness events occurring on campus."

Q: "Anything else we should know?"

"Our providers and clinic staff strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students. We understand accessing healthcare can be intimidating and sometimes confusing, but we want to empower students to take ownership of their health and wellness journey. To make an appointment or ask questions, students can walk into our clinic during business hours or call (909) 537-5241."
