Interested in LGBTQ History?
A comprehensive compilation of LGBT history in the U.S. has been assembled by The National Park Service as part of their “Telling All American’s Stories” initiative, found under “LGBT Heritage.” Their theme study contains 32 chapters of intersectional LGBT heritage in the United States. They also list featured parks, featured places, educational resources, and additional resources under “LGBT Heritage” on the main page.
We also recommend checking out the books in our LGBTQ+ History and Nonfiction book list. If you are more interested in the personal stories of LGBTQ individuals, we recommend the books in our Biographies and Memoirs book list.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month
LGBT History Month was created in 1994 by a high school history teacher in Missouri called Rodney Wilson. October was selected because 1) public schools are in session, and 2) October already marked existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11) and the anniversary of the first march on Washington by LGBT people in 1979 on Oct. 14.
The month was endorsed by organizations such as GLSEN and GLAAD. In 2006, Equality Forum assumed responsibility for providing content, promotion and resources for LGBT History Month. Every year, the LGBT History Month website features a different LGBT person for each day of the month to celebrate the accomplishments of iconic LGBT figures throughout history. The website also includes a database for exploring their entire collection of icon profiles.
