The Department of Art and Design is housed entirely in its own Visual Arts Center. We have outstanding and comprehensive facilities, some of the best in the 23-campus CSU system.
Here, you will find dedicated painting and drawing studios; classrooms for graphic design, web-design, UX/UI design (user-experience/user-interface), virtual reality, imaging, illustration and animation resources; labs and darkrooms for traditional chemical photography alongside well-equipped digital photography lab and a lighting studio; a large printmaking studio that supports traditional and digital techniques; sculpture studios with welding rooms, a foundry area and forge; hot, warm and cold glass making areas; a massive ceramics area and outdoor kiln yard; comprehensive wood workshops; a metal shop; digital fabrication machinery and an electronic Interaction Lab, plus multiple specialist classrooms.
Alongside this we have the innovative VRC (Visual Resource Center), which provides support to faculty and students for the research of art, art history, craft and design resources, including books and journals but also a vast array of online resources including specialist art and design image databases. The VRC also holds iMacs, iPad Pros, MacBook Pros, projectors, and other scanning and printing resources available for faculty and student use.
We also have a range of exhibitions spaces to show art and design works by our students – Gallery VA106, display cabinets, our courtyard, S11 (a dedicated graduate student exhibition space), and our excellent working relationship with RAFFMA (the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art) on campus, which hosts the end-of-year student show, a rotating schedule of exhibitions by nationally and internationally-acclaimed artists, and its collection of modern and contemporary art, as well as its world-renowned collection of Egyptian artifacts.
