The Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) program at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) offers a cutting-edge Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology, tailored for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree or are currently pursuing one and are eager to advance their expertise in the integration of technology within educational settings. This program is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively incorporate technology into teaching and learning environments. Application Categories

We have two categories of students in our e-Learning Certificate program. These categories are:

  1. Current CSUSB student
  2. Non-CSUSB student

CSUSB Student

Students currently enrolled in an academic program at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) have the opportunity to enhance their marketability by adding the certificate program to their current studies. If you're interested in enrolling in our E-Learning courses, please refer to the Certificate Requirements section below to add courses through your MyCoyote account. Once you've completed the required courses, submit your application here to receive your certificate. 

 

Non-CSUSB Student

If you are not currently enrolled in any programs at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB), you may register for the courses via Cal State Apply. Application Deadlines:

  • Spring 2025: 12/01/2024
  • Fall 2025: 07/31/2024
  • Spring 2026: 12/01/2025

Admission Requirements for Non-CSUSB Students

  • Minimum GPA: 2.5 (The admissions process considers a variety of factors, including personal attributes, past experiences, and future goals, to ensure a good fit for the program.)
  • Unofficial Transcripts: Required from each college or university attended since high school.
  • Statement of Purpose: Outline your motivation for pursuing the E-Learning certificate and how it aligns with your professional goals.

Required Courses (18 units) 

Six courses are required to obtain the certificate in Educational Technology: 

ETEC 5000 Foundations in Instructional Design & Technology (3 units)

Introduction to the field of Instructional Design & Technology and its foundations. An overview of IDT key terminologies, learning theories, research trends and issues, and basic technological competency. This is a prerequisite for all other ETEC required courses; an IT orientation with program faculty/advisors will be part of the first week of the course. Formerly ETEC 500, 547. (3 units)

ETEC 5430 Inquiry of Instructional Technology and Learning I (3 units)

Exploration of connections between technology and the teaching and learning process through a study of research design, data collection and analysis. Formerly ETEC 543.

ETEC 5440 Process of Instructional Design and Technology I (3 units)

Examination of various models of instructional design and procedures used in the production of instructional materials. Formerly ETEC 544.

ETEC 5460 Technology Integration in The Classroom (3 units)

Exploration of basic principles of operation of computer hardware and software, and basic troubleshooting techniques for computer systems, effective integration of technology into the curriculum, digital literacy, and the legal and ethical issues related to the use of technology. Formerly ETEC 546.

ETEC 6440 Process of Instructional Design and Technology II (3 units)

Advanced application of instructional design models and procedures to produce instructional materials. Prerequisite: ETEC 5000 and ETEC 5440. Formerly ETEC 644.  (3 units)

ETEC 6550 Multimedia Production with Emerging Instructional Technologies (3 units)

Production of multimedia projects using various emerging instructional technologies and authoring tools. May be repeated for credit as subject matter changes and with consent of instructor. Formerly ETEC676D. (3 units) Different technologies will be covered each semester.  

 

Transfer Credit Policy

Candidates must earn at least two-thirds of their certificate-applicable credits directly from CSUSB.

From Certificate in Educational Technology to Master's Degree in IDT

If you begin the certificate program and develop an interest in the field of Instructional Design and Technology (IDT), you might decide to pursue a Master's degree in IDT. To do so, you will need to apply and gain admission to the MA in IDT program through Cal State Apply.
