Cal State San Bernardino continues its recognition as a top school for men and women of the military service, ranking at No. 15 in the nation in the Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 list for four-year universities.
CSUSB has been listed among the top 20 every year since the first ranking in 2014 on what was formerly known as the Best for Vets: College list.
The 2018 rankings saw a record number 600 schools participate in the annual surveys, with less than half of the schools making the cut. The listings consisted of 218 schools and was divided into 140 four-year colleges, 34 two-year colleges, 24 career and technical colleges, and 20 online and nontraditional schools. In order to be included in this year’s annual rankings, every college had to submit a 150-question survey.
The 2018 rankings were formed from the colleges survey responses on what veterans seemed important to them and data from the federal education, defense and veterans affairs departments to determine how schools stacked up across five categories: university culture, academic quality and outcomes, policies, student support, and cost and financial aid.
The colleges were assessed on their veteran centers and services, policy agreements (Principles of Excellence, 8 Keys to Veterans’ Success and Defense Department Memorandum of Understanding), GI Bill gap coverage, staff support for students, extracurricular activity, the average amount of money spent on instruction, graduation rate, and retention rate.
Of the schools listed in the rankings, many reported higher graduation rates of students with military ties than or equal to the graduation rates of their overall student population. CSUSB students with military ties had a graduation rate of 71 percent compared to 52 percent of the overall student population, and had a higher full-time retention rate of 89 percent, which was two percent higher than the CSUSB student population.
