Relational and Organizational Communication (ROC)

The Relational and Organizational Communication (ROC) concentration develops the communication skills essential for career success and is highly sought by employers. These skills include listening, writing, interpersonal communication, leadership, interviewing, networking, conflict management, and intercultural communication. With a strong communication research and presentation foundation, students learn to influence society, emphasize workplace relationships, explore organizational systems, encode and decode persuasion, become impactful leaders, and understand civic engagement.  The program prepares students to drive positive change and address societal challenges in local and global communities.

Here's what students can expect:

  • Through coursework, students explore how communication shapes relationships, promotes well-being, and fosters global participation. The curriculum analyzes social patterns through observation, analysis, and criticism of human interactions, communication behavior, and important technological considerations.
  • Graduates are well-prepared for careers in sales, human resources, for-profit and nonprofit work, training, education, and consulting or advanced professional degrees in law, management, and marketing.
  • Our faculty are highly qualified in their areas of specialization. They are conducting important research, earning multi-million dollar federal grants, award-winning teachers and scholars, participating in creative scholarly works in interdisciplinary endeavors, directors of programs and centers and here to help you be the best leaders in our field.

Note: although our concentration does not have a designated online program, we do offer a number of courses online. We recommend you consult with your faculty advisor about modality and course offerings when planning your schedule. You do not need to take classes in one singular modality– we offer courses in face-to-face; hybrid; and virtual modalities.
