Want to take a university class without being admitted? Open University allows anyone to enroll in classes without being admitted to the university. You can take courses for personal enrichment or start your college career. Open University gives you the flexibility to take courses on a space-available basis and earn college credit.
HOW TO ENROLL INTO OPEN UNIVERSITY
1. Check Course Availability
Visit the Class Schedule to search for available courses. This will display available seats left in the class.
Each course section has a unique 5-digit class number. You will need this number to register.
If there is a related lab or discussion class, there is a section on the bottom of the form to write the 5-digit class number.
2. Complete the Registration Form
Fill out one Open U Registration Form per course.
Include the 5-digit class number from the Class Schedule.
Signatures are required if the course has prerequisites or is full.
If you do not have a Coyote ID, leave that section blank- we will assign your ID after registration is completed.
3. Get Registration Form Signatures from Instructor and Department Chair
Class with Prerequisites:
Student must e-mail the instructor their registration form and unofficial transcript in order to take the class.
Click instructor's name on the Class Schedule to find instructor contact details for that class.
Students will also be required to get the department chair to sign for the second required signature.
Refer to the Department Chair List for contact information.
Class is Full:
You must get approval from the instructor and department chair.
It is the department's decision if the student can enroll past the seat limit.
Starting Week 3 of the Term:
Both signatures required.
After you have both signatures, e-mail your signed registration form (or email approvals) to: openu@csusb.edu.
4. Submit Payment with Approved Registration Form
We begin accepting payments from Open University students beginning on the first day of the semester.
Tuition is $340 per unit (additional course fees may apply for lab and course materials)
Payments can be made through our Payment Form, by telephone 909-537-5975 or in person at CGI 301B.
We accept Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
Open University students can only enroll beginning the first day of class on a space-available basis. Students may enroll in up to 18 units (undergraduate) or 15 units (graduate) during the Fall and Spring terms; different unit maximums apply for Summer and Winter sessions.
To request an overload, permission from the instructor, the department chair, and the college dean is required.
Open University does not provide academic advising. Students are solely responsible for determining whether a course meets academic, professional, or licensure requirements. Enrollment in a course, including approval by an instructor or academic department, does not guarantee that the course will apply toward any degree, certificate, credential, or licensure requirement at CSUSB or any external agency. A maximum of 24 Open University units may be applied toward a bachelor’s degree and 9 units toward a master’s degree, subject to approval by the appropriate academic department.
