Why Study Abroad - One Student's Story (English)

Coyote in Cusco

This experience enriched me in many ways, both educationally and personally. The program, organized by Dr. Bibiana Díaz, lasted 8 days and included the cities of Lima and Cusco.

In Lima, we had the privilege of participating in theater workshops, for three days, taught by the renowned Grupo Cultural Yayachkani - which has more than 50 years of experience. They instructed us in body movement activities, vocal techniques, and character performances using different types of masks. In the afternoons, cultural learning was complemented by visits to different pre-Columbian art museums, exhibitions, and archaeological sites such as Pucllana and Pachacamac. While visits to the Surquillo Market Square gave us the opportunity to learn about, and taste, fruits that many were seeing for the first time including the Cape Gosseberry, Sweet Granadilla, and the lúcuma. This new gastronomic knowledge made the connection with local Peruvians more pleasant and varied.

On the other hand, the visit to Cusco was “the finishing touch” as it is popularly said, since it has so many amazing archaeological sites. As expected, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu was the highlight for the CSUSB Coyotes during our tour of Cusco. It was a magical place, since the enchantment and energy of the Incas easily transports you to another time, which makes it difficult to describe in words. Our tour of this wonder, while listening to the history of this fantastic place - as narrated by the guide in charge - was a once in a lifetime experience.

Studying abroad is definitely enriching and unique. Learning while being in contact with people, places, food is very significant. In addition, being able to share with classmates and university staff is fun, and creates a very special connection between everyone. This opportunity has been a dream come true that I hope to repeat in the future. I advise all CSUSB coyotes to consider including this on their bucket lists.
