Getting a Multiple Subject Credential
The Multiple Subject Credential program offers five options to meet the Subject Matter Requirement (SMR): 1) Completion of a CTC-approved program, 2) Holding a relevant baccalaureate degree, 3) Passing the CSET Multiple Subjects exam, 4) Completing coursework that aligns with subject matter domains, or 5) A combination of coursework and CSET exams. Each option has specific requirements and verification processes. Candidates should choose the path that best aligns with their educational background and career goals. View each option below and see which fits your pathway.
Completion of a subject matter program approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. CSUSB does not currently offer an approved subject matter option for Multiple Subject.
Multiple Subject Credential program candidates that complete a CTC-approved subject matter program outside of CSUSB, must submit an official subject matter verification letter signed by the authorized representative.
Successful completion of a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. For multiple subject credentials, a major in any of the academic degree majors listed below will be accepted.
Applicable Degree Majors:
- Liberal Studies

- Liberal Studies: Elementary Education

Passage of a subject matter examination, the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) in Multiple Subjects.
CSUSB Multiple Subject Credential candidates using the Multiple Subject CSET exam must pass all three subtests and submit official scores with their application to satisfy SMR.
Successful completion of coursework at one or more regionally accredited institutions of higher education that addresses each of the domains of the subject matter requirements for Multiple Subject, adopted by the Commission in a content area of the credential pursuant to Section 44282, as verified by a Commission-approved program of professional preparation.
Candidates wishing to use this option must request an evaluation from the Teacher Education & Foundations Department. Evaluations are only available to prospective students applying to CSUSB Watson College of Education’s Multiple Subject Credential program.
SMR may be met through coursework and Multiple Subject CSET exams that meet or exceed the subject matter domains. Candidates may have their transcripts evaluated to meet one or more CSET subtests if they have sufficient qualifying coursework in the subject matter domains. See the coursework domain section above for a list of coursework that meets each subtest of the appropriate CSET exam.
CSUSB Multiple Subject Credential candidates using a combination of coursework and CSET exams to satisfy SMR will need to submit proof of coursework evaluation and passing CSET scores with their application. Evaluations are only available to prospective students applying to CSUSB Watson College of Education’s Multiple Subject Credential program.
