Annika Anderson, Ph.D., Executive Director
Dr. Anderson is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Sociology at California State University, San Bernardino. Specializing in Criminology and Social Stratification, she received her B.A. in Public Relations from Pennsylvania State University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Washington State University.
Since 2016, Dr. Anderson has served as the Executive Director and Principal Investigator of Project Rebound. Prior to her appointment as Department Chair, she taught courses in Criminology, Deviant Behavior, Social Psychology, Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, Crime, Desistance, and Reentry, as well as supervised students in internships and independent studies courses. Her research interests focus on developmental and life-course criminology, reentry, social stratification, and race and ethnic relations. She has presented her research at numerous conferences and has published several works on crime and reentry based on research conducted in San Bernardino.

Michael Griggs, MSW, Program Coordinator
Michael Griggs, a current Ph.D. student in the UCLA Social Welfare Department, is a justice-impacted scholar-activist whose seven-year journey through California's prison system sparked his dedication to education and reform. Having recently achieved record expungement, his remarkable path from incarceration to academia includes earning a BA in Social Justice from Pitzer College and an MSW from CSU San Bernardino, where he progressed from Outreach Coordinator to Program Coordinator upon graduation in 2024. His unique perspective, shaped by academic achievements and lived experience, drives his collaboration with community-based organizations throughout California, particularly in juvenile justice initiatives. His research interests center on educational equity within prison programs, ensuring access to college opportunities for incarcerated individuals, and achieving parity between educational experiences inside and outside prison walls.

Sofia Alvarenga, MSW, Outreach Coordinator
Sofia Alvarenga earned her Master of Social Work from California State University, San Bernardino, building on her Associate of Arts in Psychology and Sociology and Bachelor of Social Work. Drawing from her lived experience as a formerly incarcerated individual, she champions educational access for justice-impacted people. Her dynamic approach includes developing comprehensive educational plans and providing hands-on support to help system-impacted individuals navigate higher education. Her commitment to advocacy and personal understanding of transformation through education makes her an invaluable resource for students pursuing their academic goals.

Andrea Giuffre, Ph.D., Research and Internship Coordinator
Dr. Giuffre earned her Criminology & Criminal Justice doctorate from the University of Missouri - St. Louis, a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice with Victimology specialization from Seattle University, and dual Bachelor's degrees in Law, Societies & Justice and Philosophy from the University of Washington. Her research focuses on the social impacts of criminal legal system contact, financial operations, and corrections. Her work appears in Criminology, Criminology & Public Policy, Justice Quarterly, and The British Journal of Criminology. She is currently studying how individuals on community supervision navigate social support exchange.
STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM

Rudy Garcia, Social Media & Communications Student Assistant
Rudy Garcia is a senior honors student majoring in Sociology at California State University, San Bernardino, and is set to graduate in Fall 2025. As Project Rebound's Social Media and Communications Assistant, he manages digital presence through social media management, website development, and multimedia content creation. Skilled in Final Cut Pro and Adobe Photoshop, he produces professional marketing materials, event flyers, and video content, including graduation ceremonies and orientations. As a former Events Coordinator for Club Rebound, he supported community-building initiatives for justice-impacted and system-impacted students. His research focuses on Cognitive Transformation Theory, examining how higher education influences personal growth and social behavior among formerly incarcerated individuals. He plans to pursue a Ph.D., aspiring to contribute to criminal justice reform research and serve as a university professor supporting transformative education.

Alex McLaughlin, Student Assistant
Alex McLaughlin is a psychology student at California State University, San Bernardino. As a Student Assistant for Project Rebound, she manages essential administrative tasks, including bill payments, member communications, enrollment processing, report preparation, and mail management. As an active member of Club Rebound and an avid reader, Alex contributes to the program's supportive community while pursuing her academic growth. Her work with Project Rebound aligns with her career aspirations, as she plans to become a child clinical psychologist and earn her PsyD, enabling her to make a meaningful impact in children's mental health care.

Luis Trujillo, Juvenile Justice Student Assistant
Luis Trujillo is a senior honors student majoring in biological psychology at California State University, San Bernardino, set to graduate in Spring 2025. As Project Rebound's Juvenile Justice Student Assistant, he provides tutoring, mentorship, and guidance to formerly incarcerated youth. He serves as President of Club Rebound, leading community initiatives, including a campus garden and student support programs. His research explores shame and guilt experienced by formerly incarcerated individuals, building on his Yale University internship in computational analysis. He is pursuing postbaccalaureate and Ph.D. programs in neuroscience, focusing on trauma-related biomarkers in incarcerated populations to better understand and address generational trauma.
