Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus has been providing free healthcare services for homeless and unsheltered people.

The program has been selected as one of six community partners who will have the opportunity to utilize the mobile unit for medical and educational purposes, which will be purchased by The Desert Healthcare District and Foundation.

In 2018, Diane Vines, a nursing instructor at CSUSB and its Palm Desert Campus, created the Street Medicine program to provide much-needed healthcare services to people in the Coachella Valley.

Besides teaching multiple nursing courses at CSUSB, Diane Vines also runs the university’s Street Medicine Program, which she helped create in 2018.

Street Medicine program nursing students work in the field. The $50,000 grant will be used to improve access to healthcare for traditionally underserved populations, increase mobile medical clinics, improve health-related infrastructure in the Coachella Valley and strengthen engagement of nurses and nursing students with the homeless.

The Street Medicine program is a collaborative partnership between the CSUSB Department of Nursing at the Palm Desert Campus; the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine; Desert Regional Medical Center; Well in the Desert; and the Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine.

CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus nursing program has received a grant from the Regional Access Project Foundation to help its Street Medicine program for the homeless and unsheltered.

The Regional Access Project Foundation grant will be used to purchase much-needed supplies for the street medicine team to use in the field while providing healthcare services to the homeless and unsheltered populations in the Coachella Valley.
