Stuart Sumida leads an animated life
Phi Kappa Phi Forum
Fall 2024
If you’ve seen an animated feature film in recent years, there’s a good chance you’ve connected with Stuart Sumida’s work. Sumida, a professor of biology at California State University, San Bernadino, specializes in vertebrate paleontology. When he’s not teaching, Hollywood has given him plenty of other work to do. Because of his expertise in anatomy, Sumida is often asked to advise animation artists on how to make characters move most naturally. He’s tackled more than 70 such projects in all, ranging from films to TV programs to video games. Sumida’s assignments have included the Academy Award-winning productions “Soul,” “Ratatouille,” and “Zootopia.”
