Certificate Program

The Certificate Program in Healthcare Spanish prepares you to successfully interact with members of the Hispanic community as you gain oral and written competency in professional Spanish and an understanding of Hispanic cultures. The Program begins each Fall and Spring and can be completed in 1.5-2 years.

How to Enroll

Note: If you are interested and NOT currently a CSUSB student, you may apply for the certificate via Graduate Division (see here) or enroll in individual courses via Open University (see here).

You can begin with the first course (Span 2251) at any time, if you meet the pre-requisite (Span 1112 or equivalent, Spanish Placement Exam, Spanish AP exam).

You should add the Certificate Program to your transcript 1-2 semesters prior to graduating but no more than 3 semesters prior to graduating.

To add, you can go to the Registrar's Certificate Programs page and then click on “Application for Certificate Programs” (at the bottom of the page). You will need to pay a fee of $25 to add the program.

Program Learning Outcomes

The following refer to three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, presentational, as well as to the ACTFL level of Intermediate High (www.actfl.org).

• Communicate effectively in Spanish within the Healthcare and related fields using specialized professional language.
• Comprehend and analyze oral and written texts within Healthcare and related fields in Spanish effectively and critically as socially and ideologically constructed and shaped by context and culture.
• Demonstrate ability to think critically, pose questions, and solve problems using your communication skills and knowledge/awareness of the Spanish language and cultures, and make connections with your local and global communities within Healthcare and related fields.
• Apply specialized language and culture concepts and ways of thinking in new settings and contexts by engaging in local and global communities within Healthcare and related fields.
• Demonstrate an understanding of multiple perspectives to respectfully interact, collaborate, and solve problems across communities and cultures, to respect other cultures and to become aware of stereotypes in the target community as well as the local one as related to Healthcare and related fields.

Curriculum (18 units)

*SPAN 4401 also offered as Study Abroad (in the Summer).

Pre-requisite to begin the program with Span 2251 (one of the following)

Spanish Placement Exam: If you are a native speaker of Spanish with no prior Spanish coursework, take the Spanish Placement Exam (it’s free & can be taken any time!). Note: If you place in 1112 or higher, the Spanish class you take counts toward your GE! 

SPAN 1112 (or equivalent transfer credit). Span 1112 counts toward your GE and has a pre-requisite of Span 1111 (or placement exam or transfer credit or Spanish AP score 3). 

Spanish AP Exam: Score 4 or higher.
