Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) Information

America Reads/ America Counts Program

The America Reads and America Counts Tutoring Program provides an opportunity for students with financial need to earn a portion of their college expenses through part-time employment. ISA’s provide tutoring to children K-6th grade in reading, K-9th grade in math, and family literacy. ISA's will be placed in local school districts or tutorial agencies. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will notify selected students if they are accepted to the program.

An ISA under the America Reads/America Counts Tutoring Program may work up to 20 hours per week. ISAs can gain valuable experience and skills to improve their resume. As a participant, students will also have an opportunity to connect with their off-campus community.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the current award year and demonstrate financial need
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Must be enrolled in at least half-time. (6 units undergraduate; 4 units graduate) per semester
  • Pass a criminal background check that includes a Livescan, drug screen and TB test. The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships will add an Institutional Grant to cover this expense.
  • Enroll and pass ESEC 5450 class
    • ESEC 5450 class provides tutor training for students to work with low literacy and at-risk adolescents and adults
    • Topics include literacy methods, multicultural issues, learning disabilities and use of educational software
  • Must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress standards
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, eligible non-citizen, or permanent resident

America Reads/America Counts Tutor Application

Students interested in a paid Federal Work-Study (FWS) job as a reading or math tutor may complete an application for the ISA programs.

Hiring Instructions for America Reads/America Counts Tutoring Program

Step 1:   Students are required to pass their criminal background check and pass the online tutorial prior to completing the hiring process. Register for the tutorial.

NOTE: Before exiting the course assessment, please take a screenshot of your assessment results (in lieu of the certificate of completion) and submit to your supervisor for proof of completion.

Step 2: A list of the participating school districts and tutorial agencies will be provided during the first class meeting

Step 3: Contact a school district or tutorial agency to arrange an interview. 

Step 4:  The employer will initiate the request to hire a FWS-ISA student

Step 5: The student will receive the hiring forms via adobe sign to begin the hiring process.  Students will need to provide the names and emails of their supervisor and administrator to complete the process.  The hiring forms include the following:

  • FWS Work-Authorization
  • FWS Terms of Employment
  • FWS Routing Slip
  • ISA Contract Letter
  • Description of Duties Form

The FWS hiring forms will be forward to the supervisor and administrator for approval.  Students will receive a copy of the FWS Routing Slip that will serve as confirmation that the hiring process has been completed.  Students may not begin working until they receive the stamped routing slip from Student Employment.

New FWS hires will be contacted by Student Employment to submit additional hiring forms to confirm their eligibility to work.
