What is the duration of the MA in Education program?

The MA in Education program can be completed in as few as 2 semesters if you transfer 12 credit units from a credential program. However, the program can also be tailored to fit your schedule, allowing for flexible pacing

Can the program be completed part-time or online?

The program offers a hybrid format with both online and face-to-face classes. This flexibility allows students to balance their studies with other commitments, making it possible to complete the program part-time.

What are the start dates for the program, and how often are new cohorts admitted?

The program offers start terms in both Fall and Spring, admitting new cohorts at these times.

What is the application process and deadline?

The application process for the MA in Education program at CSUSB involves several steps:

  1. Submit an Online Application: Begin by completing the online application through Cal State Apply.
  2. Provide Required Documents: You will need to submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and any additional documents specified by the program.
  3. Review and Decision: Once your application is complete, it will be reviewed by the admissions committee. You will be notified of their decision via email.
  4. Deadlines: Application deadlines vary depending on whether you are applying for the Fall or Spring semester. It is important to check the Graduate Studies Office for the most current deadline information.

Yes. Or currently enrolled in a credential program.

Can I be enrolled in the MA in Education program and a teaching credential program concurrently?
Possibly. While it is possible to enroll in both programs simultaneously, doing so may affect your financial aid eligibility. It is recommended that you consult with the CSUSB Financial Aid Office to understand the implications. Additionally, you should carefully consider the course load you can manage while being enrolled in two programs. Some students find it feasible to apply to the MA in Education program during the last semester of their credential program.

Program Structure and Content

Is a thesis or comprehensive exam required to complete the program?

The MA in Education program requires a comprehensive exam as part of the graduation requirements; there is no thesis option.

How much flexibility is there in the course schedule?

The MA in Education program at CSUSB offers considerable flexibility to accommodate the needs of working professionals and students with other commitments. Courses are offered in a hybrid format, allowing you to participate classes online and face-to-face. Additionally, classes are scheduled once a week during the late afternoon or evening, with options such as:

  • 4:00 PM - 6:45 PM
  • 5:30 PM - 8:15 PM
  • 7:00 PM - 9:45 PM (Monday-Thursday)

This scheduling allows you to balance your coursework with your professional and personal responsibilities. Students can also choose to take one to three courses per semester, depending on their availability and desired pace, providing further customization of their learning experience.

Can I complete the program online?

The program is offered in a hybrid format, with all courses featuring both online and face-to-face components. The extent of online versus in-person instruction varies depending on the course. While some courses have a stronger online component, you will need to attend some face-to-face sessions on campus. 

Credit Transfer and Previous Experience

Will my previous teaching experience or credentials count toward program requirements?

Yes, if you have completed a credential program at CSUSB, you can transfer up to 12 units toward the MA in Education program. This reduces your required coursework to just 18 units, meaning you only need to complete 6 additional courses to earn your MA degree. Credits over seven years old cannot be used.

Can I transfer credits from another graduate program?

Yes, you can transfer up to 9 units from another credential or master’s program into the MA in Education program. Credits over seven years old cannot be used.

Can I work while completing the program? How does that affect my course load?

Yes, you can work while completing the MA in Education program at CSUSB.
