Applied Archaeology, M.A.
The Master of Arts in Applied Archaeology is a professionally oriented program designed to prepare students for middle- and upper-level careers in the archaeological sector of the cultural resource management (CRM) industry. The core of the program comprises courses in archaeology with an emphasis on combining practical experience in field and laboratory studies with an internship and research project undertaken in collaboration with a government agency or private firm that conducts archaeological investigations in the context of CRM. Students will also obtain an in-depth understanding of archaeological theory, California archaeology, and the laws, regulations, and procedures relevant to archaeology and CRM in our region. The program is intended for evening students primarily and, therefore, classes are predominantly scheduled between 6 and 10 p.m.
Child Development, M.A.
The Master of Arts Program in Child Development (MACD) is a 2-year, 38-40 units evening program that strives to foster an understanding of the major theories and empirical research in child development from infancy through adolescence. Including knowledge of core psychological domains of cognition, language, physiology, emotions, personality, and social behavior, along with an understanding of developmental methods. An emphasis is placed on understanding development in contexts in which children live their lives, including family, school, and peer groups.
Clinical/Counseling Psychology, M.S.
The Masters of Science degree in clinical/counseling psychology is a 63-71 semester-unit program designed to develop practical skills in counseling, through supervised training and experience, and knowledge and understanding of relevant subject matter and research methodology. The program culminates with a thesis or comprehensive examination and an internship experience. Students receive close individual mentoring as only 10 to 15 students are admitted each year. The M.S. program operates an on-campus psychology clinic for clinical training purposes. The program is designed to meet the basic educational requirements for licensure in California as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) set by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Licensure as a MFT in California enables individuals to work in clinical and community mental health settings, engage in private practice with third-party reimbursement, and, after two year of licensure, supervise MFT trainees and interns. Additionally, the high standards maintained for the California license means that other states with master's-level counseling licenses may recognize the MFT for reciprocity purposes. Additionally, the clinical/counseling program has a track record of preparing students who later enter doctoral programs in clinical or counseling psychology.
Criminal Justice, M.A.
The Master of Arts in Criminal Justice is designed to serve the growing number of individuals in the criminal justice system who desire post baccalaureate education, as well as those in more traditional public and private employment who may wish to acquire further education in criminal justice. The degree program offers two options. One is a thesis option designed for students who intend to pursue graduate studies beyond the M.A. level and those students who have special research interests in the criminal justice system. The examination option is for those with administrative and management goals. The program can serve a variety of student interests. It has been designed with a limited prerequisite requirement to enable students with baccalaureate degrees in related fields such as psychology, administration, anthropology, sociology or social sciences to enroll along with students with undergraduate degrees in criminal justice.
History, M.A.
The MA in History at California State University, San Bernardino offers students the opportunity to further their study of history in an innovative, active, and rigorous program. It is intended to train future historians and promote the professional, career, and personal goals of its student population. It is designed to provide students a comprehensive understanding of the historical origins of the contemporary and increasingly globalized world. Aspiring historians, current social studies teachers, and professionals that want to immerse themselves in the study of history will acquire a sophisticated understanding of current historical practice. The MA in History offers students the opportunity to go substantially beyond their undergraduate coursework, obtain advanced research, critical analysis, and writing skills, and gain a comprehensive and global understanding of the history profession.
Psychological Science, M.A.
The Psychological Science program is a 33-4-semester unit program designed to provide a broad background in psychology suitable for employment requiring a Master of Arts degree. The Psychological Science program is especially designed to improve the candidacy of students who wish to enter doctoral programs in any academic area of psychology. In the past 10 years, over two-thirds of students awarded an M.A. degree from the Psychological Science program were subsequently admitted to doctoral programs in the United States and Canada. We pride ourselves on being a program that emphasizes individual educational mentoring. Between 10 and 15 students are enrolled each year. All Psychological Science M.A. students conduct original research as a thesis project. Research productivity of Psychological Science students and faculty ranks favorably when compared to other M.A. programs across the country. Students enroll in one of two concentrations: General Concentration or Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience Concentration.
Industrial/Organizational Psychology, M.S.
The Master of Science Degree in Industrial & Organizational Psychology provides a comprehensive slate of I/O-specific courses designed to prepare students for immediate entry into careers in applied settings. Academic coursework is supplemented with an applied externship completed for academic credit. The program requirements provide excellent preparation for those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. upon completion of the MS. The course of study also includes a strong, five-course quantitative sequence in research methodology, statistics, and measurement. I/O students are expected to become competent in theory, research, and application of psychology as each relates to human behavior in private and public organizations.
National Security Studies, M.A.
The Master of Arts in National Security Studies is a professionally oriented, interdisciplinary, graduate-level program housed within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The program is designed to develop an understanding of the substance and principles of defense policy analysis, strategic planning and arms control in relation to the contemporary international environment. Flexibility within elective courses permits the student to emphasize research in national security issues of his or her special interests. The program is relevant to established career personnel in defense analysis and related specialties, the military services, the civil service and the intelligence community. Additionally, the program is structured to provide motivated persons holding a Bachelor of Arts degree and/or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with the higher educational skills necessary for entry into the above mentioned career fields or to pursue doctoral studies.
National Cyber Security Studies, M.S.
We are one of a few graduate programs in the country that is devoted to the study of U.S. national cyber security, and the second in the California State University system. The program was founded in 2015. Our fully accredited Master’s program (M.S.) provides a comprehensive curriculum with foundations in strategy and strategic studies for students interested in pursuing careers in service for the U.S. government (USG). NCSS alumni serve in many different career fields, including defense, security, and intelligence.
Social Work, M.S.W.
The Department of Social Work offers courses leading to the Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and is designed to provide for the education of advanced social work practitioners. The program is based upon the requirements of the Council on Social Work Education, the national accrediting body for social work programs. The MSW program comprises a Foundation and Advanced curriculum. Students must complete all Foundation and Advanced classes. Both the Foundation and the Advanced curriculum is divided into micro and macro social work practice. The micro practice sequence of courses prepares students to work with individuals, families and groups. The macro practice sequence of courses prepares students to work with organizations and communities with an integrated focus on policy practice.
Social Work and Master of Public Administration Concurrent Degrees, M.S.W./M.P.A.
The Department of Public Administration and the School of Social Work offer a graduate program leading to Master of Social Work/Master of Public Administration Concurrent Degrees. The degrees are intended for those with an interest in and promise for a career in social services that will lead to top administrative roles. Degree holders will have skills and knowledge to facilitate well-being and change at all system levels. Prospective concurrent degrees students must be accepted under the admission procedures of each program. The MSW program requires a separate application available through the School of Social Work which will include the additional statement instructions and the Plan of Study form for the concurrent MSW/MPA degrees.
