FAQ for HERI Survey and Data

Q: How were the questions developed?

A: The HERI Staff Climate Survey (SCS), and HERI Faculty Survey were developed at the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Q: Why did we administer these surveys and what will be done with the results?

A:  We administered the surveys for the following reasons: 

  • WSCUC requires that we examine institutional climate and act on the findings.
  • The DEI steering committee wanted to assess important variables such as sense of belonging.
  • We needed a mechanism for tracking progress on important institutional priorities such as our strategic plan and goals emerging from the Cozen report.

We will use (and are already using) the data to design interventions that address domains requiring improvement.

Q: Why were so many questions included in the surveys?

A: CSUSB did not have the ability to omit questions from the survey. In using the nationally standardized tool, we were required to ask every question in the survey.

Q: Why are we not able to view the results for every survey question in the reports posted?

A: Only questions that had a significantly large pool of respondents are included in the reports so as not to compromise anonymity.

Q: Are we able to obtain the raw data?

A: To protect the confidentiality of participants in the survey, raw data will not be made available, which is consistent with how the survey was advertised during the open period.

Q: Will the data be disaggregated? 

A: Disaggregated data are being built into dashboards that will be posted in Spring 2025, ensuring confidentiality can be maintained (e.g., disaggregating based on large enough sample sizes).

Q: Are we able to obtain the raw data?

A: To protect the confidentiality of participants in the survey, raw data will not be made available, which is consistent with how the survey was advertised during the open period.

Q: When were these data collected and when will they be collected again?

A: We administered the surveys in March 2024 and expect to re-administer the survey in Year 4 or 5 of our strategic plan (AY 26-27 or 27-28).
