Recent paintings by Corey Pemberton
This collection features six recent mixed media paintings by artist Corey Pemberton on loan from local private collections. Grounded in traditional portrait painting, the works are masterful compositions of color and pattern. In Pemberton’s paintings, people of color and queer folks are depicted as relaxed and in domestic settings. Inkjet prints, found textiles, and handmade paper are among the diverse materials that the artist incorporates into the paintings to bring depth to his compositions. These visually compelling works, made over the last two years, declare the subjects’ individual presence through their representation, as well as their thoughtfully considered surroundings. By representing what is often not portrayed in more traditional portraiture, these paintings function simultaneously as representation and as commentary upon representation.
