RAFFMA is pleased to start the Fall 2024 semester by hosting with the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles the exhibition Korean Craft: Yesterday and Today featuring both traditional and contemporary craft from the Sookmyung Women’s University Museum collection.
This exquisite exhibition provides a view of Korean craft tradition from 16th century to the present day. The over forty objects on view include traditional uniforms, ceramics, furniture, and paintings as well as contemporary ceramics, textiles, lacquerware, and new media artwork. The traditional section of the exhibition gives a glimpse into the furniture, clothing, and decorative objects appreciated and used by Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) scholar-officials. Work by seven contemporary artists illustrates how those ideals and traditions are still expressed in contemporary artistic practice.
Curated by Hyeran Jung Ph.D. and Hyekyung Park from the Sookmyung Women’s University Museum in Seoul, South Korea the exhibition offers insight into the long-standing tradition of elegant Korean craft. Their exhibition provides a space to have a meaningful visual experience that both engages and inspires museum visitors as they learn about Korean culture.
This beautiful exhibition was made possible through the 2024 Traveling Korean Arts Project through the Korean Foundation for International CulturalExchange(KOFICE). Korean Craft, Yesterday and Today is a collaboration with Sookmyung Women's University Museum, the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, and the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art, California State University, San Bernardino
