Name Changes

Name Change at CSUSB

CSUSB has a preferred name policy that students may utilize to update their first name without a legal name change. This name will not display everywhere at CSUSB. For a list of examples of where a legal name will still display, please see below. This name will also not display on your student email.

Follow these steps to submit your name change request:

  1. Log into MyCoyote with your CoyoteID and Password
  2. Select Student Center
  3. Scroll down the page to the “Names” tab
  4. Click the “Edit” button under the “Preferred” row
  5. Enter your name

After this process, the request is sent to the Office of the Registrar for review and is typically reviewed quickly. If your preferred name is approved, it will show up in the following places:

  • Student Center
  • Faculty Center
  • Blackboard
  • Class Rosters and Grade Rosters

Currently, legal names (the name you have on record with CSUSB) will always appear on:

  • Financial Aid documents
  • Transcripts
  • Diplomas
