President's Message
Dear Friends,
The Inland Empire, a vast and culturally rich region spanning 27,000 square miles, is home to 4.5 million residents. California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), a regional anchor institution, reflects the richness, vitality and cultural diversity of its many neighbors. Since our founding as a state college in 1965 with an inaugural class of 293 students, we have become a major urban research university with more than 20,000 students and 115,000 alumni.
At every moment along our growth trajectory, we have focused on the power of creative collaboration — among individuals, groups, communities and organizations — to drive positive change and produce tangible outcomes. And we have long contributed to the Inland Empire’s growth and prosperity, from the health of our communities to the strength of our economy.
During the past six decades, we have inspired the region’s large pool of talented individuals to fulfill their dreams through higher education. Our students learn to reason, to lead, and as graduates, revolutionize their chosen fields and make a long-lasting impact in our communities. Our alumni are prepared to thrive and contribute to any sector.
To further build on the university’s vital role in enhancing the educational, cultural and economic development of the region, we have launched a $200 million fundraising initiative, the most ambitious in our history. Our Defining Moment: The Campaign for CSUSB is a “blended” endeavor, seeking support from a variety of investors: alumni, friends, corporate and foundation partners, as well as revenue from sources not typically included in capital campaigns, such as government agencies and tribal nations, which will leverage the impact of overall support. Longtime CSUSB friends and supporters James R. Watson and his wife, Judy Rodriguez Watson, are honorary campaign co-chairs.
Cal State San Bernadino is a responsible and active contributor to the economic health and sustainability of the immediate region and beyond. Today, we are poised for an unprecedented new era of growth. As alumni and friends, we ask for your help and investment to ensure a bright future for all those we serve — students, employers and the community — so our promise of access to a world-class education remains available to all for generations to come.
