Join Us for Visitor Nights
The domes will remain closed for ongoing upgrades, but they are close to completion!
During our public events, we provide tours of the facility, have telescopes set up for viewing, show slideshows of our work and more! Come join us and see what the night sky has to offer!
Events are weather-dependent, please check on the evening of the event to make sure there has not been a cancellation.
Updates can be found on this page or on our Facebook page.
What to Bring
We recommend dressing in layers as the temperature after dark can drop significantly, wearing comfortable walking shoes, and bringing a red flashlight (red cellophane over a white light flashlight works great!). This will help to preserve everyone's night vision for better viewing through the telescopes.
We also accept donations that go towards giving our students better researching and learning opportunities. See our Fundraising page for more info.
How to Get Here
The observatory is located on the north side of CSUSB's campus, atop Little Badger Hill. A small parking lot is avaliable at the top of the observatory for us during private or school events. During Visitor Nights, this parking lot is only open to those with small children and/or mobility issues. The road to the obsevatory is locked and access is restricted at all other times. This is to ensure the safety of our students and staff who regulary use the observatory for teaching and research.
View detailed directions to campus.
Upon arriving to campus, we suggest parking in Lot N or Parking Garage East. Parking permits are required and can be purchased at the kiosk at the entrance to each lot. There are pay per space spaces located in Lot N near the library. After parking, walk up the hill along Martin A. Matich roadway to arrive at the observatory. Please be aware of your surroundings while walking up to the observatory. There are no lights to illuminate your path and vehicle traffic is sharing the roadway with you. The road is steep and is not alway clear of small obstacles, such as rocks. We suggest comfortable walking shoes and flashlights to increase your safety.
Event Calendar
We aim to host a Visitor Night twice each month during the year, weather permitting. See below for our planned schedule. Plan to arrive about 30 minutes after sunset, when we begin observations, or to join us as we set up and enjoy the view from the Observatory.
