Two-time alumnus Matthew Markin ’04, ’09, an academic advisor in CSUSB’s Office of Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising, was selected as a mentor for the 2024-26 NACADA Emerging Leaders Program (ELP). NACADA is the premier global association of academic advising in higher education.

This year, six mentors and 12 emerging leaders were selected for the two-year program, which provides a platform that aims to build an inclusive and sustainable community of strong NACADA leaders. In his role, Markin will provide support and guidance to the emerging leaders as they participate in leadership development activities, collaborate with peers and experienced NACADA leaders, and fulfill responsibilities that position them for success.

Markin’s participation in the program has come full circle, as he was an emerging leader in the 2017-19 cohort.

“I am thrilled for this opportunity to help mentor NACADA’s next cohort of emerging leaders,” said Markin. “ELP was beneficial in my growth and being able to engage with professional opportunities within NACADA. I look forward to giving back to the academic advising community.”

For more than 20 years, Markin has worked at CSUSB, previously serving as an admissions counselor before taking on his current role as an academic advisor in 2013. Markin’s experience at CSUSB will provide a great foundation to build the next generation of NACADA leadership.

NACADA is an association that consists of professional advisors, counselors, faculty, administrators and students who work together to enhance the educational development of students. The association promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education.
