The Social Justice Summit at Cal State San Bernardino promises a day of meaningful breakout sessions and impactful talks that will teach attendees how to be change agents in their communities and features political strategist, social justice advocate and CNN political commentator Angela Rye.
The event, hosted by CSUSB’s Office of Student Engagement, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in CSUSB’s Santos Manuel Student Union Events Center. The summit is free and open to the public. Parking at CSUSB is $6.
“I think people should attend the Social Justice Summit because it gives them exposure to topics they may not otherwise have known anything about,” said Dion Webb, student engagement coordinator. “A lot of people may not realize what social justice means, so they should attend this to broaden their own knowledge. There are a lot of social justice movements happening right now and this summit will give insight to the purpose and direction of those movements.”
Rye, who will deliver the keynote address, is principal and CEO of IMPACT Strategies, a political advocacy firm in Washington, D.C. Along with doing political commentary for CNN, she is also an NPR political analyst who has been featured as an influential politico, lawyer and advocate by numerous publications and outlets, such as Marie Claire, Ebony and The Washington Post. Rye has also offered on-air commentary for various well-known media outlets including BET, CNN, NBC, HBO, ABC, MSNBC and TV One.
“Rye has an unwavering commitment to ensuring positive change in the political process,” her website reads. “The depth of her dialogue ranges from political campaigns to more complex legislation and administration policies that have long-term implications nationally and internationally.”
Rye also serves on the boards of the Congressional Black Caucus Institute, Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee, the Seattle University School of Law Alumni, Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network, Inclusv, and Wilberforce University. She is a member of The Links, Incorporated, National Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Washington Government Relations Group.
In addition to Rye, the event will feature CSUSB speakers including Estefania Esparza, CSUSB senior and community outreach coordinator for the Undocumented Advocates student club; Margaret B. Hill, president of the board of the San Bernardino City Unified School District, CSUSB adjunct professor and CSUSB alumna; and Raul Maldonado, graduate assistant for the CSUSB Queer and Transgender Resource Center.
The event will also offer breakout sessions that Webb describes as “engaging and insightful.”
“Attendees will learn what social justice means and what falls underneath the umbrella. They will learn how to become social justice advocates and how to stand up and speak out for their rights and the rights of others,” Webb said. “This event will be very powerful and beneficial for all that attend. I anticipate that attendees will leave this event eager to become more active in their community and in the fight for social justice.”
