
Emily Loveland (social work) published research on the impact that COVID-19 had on young people’s mental health, and Thomas Corrigan (communication and media), Ahlam Muhtaseb (media studies) and Brian Levin (criminal justice, emeritus) were mentioned in recent news coverage.

Imani Barbarin, disability rights and inclusion activist, delivered the keynote address virtually at the annual Social Justice Summit. CSUSB students had the opportunity to attend live watch parties of the keynote at the San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses, where they enjoyed a free lunch while listening to her powerful message.

Hosted by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement, this year’s summit, held March 17-20, will focus on digital advocacy, providing students with the knowledge and resources to use accessible digital tools for social justice work.

CSUSB alumnus Michael Griggs’ story is one of adversity and triumph. Formerly incarcerated, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and now guides other formerly incarcerated students on their academic journeys.

Ahlam Muhtaseb, professor of media studies, is the recipient of this prestigious National Communication Association award. According to Amy Aldridge Sanford, a member of the awards committee, “We consider the Scholarly Influence Award one for career achievement. It's awarded to the very best of senior communication scholars who've dedicated their research, teaching and service to social justice and activism.”

Tony Coulson (cybersecurity) was interviewed about ransomware and cybersecurity attacks, and Brian Levin (criminal justice, emeritus) will moderate an event on the history of discrimination in the Inland Empire hosted by Zócalo Public Square on July 16.

Keynote speaker Saul Flores shared stories about his humble beginnings in Brooklyn, New York; travels from Ecuador to North Carolina; and a life-changing trip to his mother’s hometown at the Social Justice Summit on March 15.

The annual Social Justice Summit will feature keynote speaker Saul Flores, a philanthropist, photojournalist and storyteller, on March 15 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Santos Manuel Student Union South Event Centers.

Angela Davis discussed a variety of topics at the April 17 event, including feminism, intersectionality, social justice, environmentalism and racism.
