Cal State San Bernardino graduate and undergraduate students will showcase their research and creative activities in the seventh annual Meeting of the Minds Students Research Symposium on Thursday, May 17, from 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., in the Santos Manuel Student Union.

The symposium will be part of the first CSUSB Research Week, May 14-18, expanding to a two-day event, with a student researchers luncheon on May 18, from noon–2 p.m., in the CSUSB College of Extended Learning Yasuda Center.

This year’s Meeting of the Minds event welcomes 202 participating students, featuring 126 undergraduate and 76 graduate students, presenting 119 poster and 61 oral presentations, alongside two art displays, all of which will help students refine their presentations skills and an opportunity to share their talents and knowledge with CSUSB.

The event will feature faculty keynote speaker Alexandru Roman, associate professor of public administration. Also scheduled is Outstanding Student Researcher Khanh Luu’s “Life on the Rocks” presentation; the 2017-18 Outstanding Scholarship, Research, Creative Activities Award ceremony; and a special performance by Alastair Edmonstone, piano accompanist for the CSUSB music department, and student Alexis Ramirez in “Je disque rien ne m'épouvante” from the opera “Carmen” by Georges Bizet.

Participants with the best oral and poster presentations will receive awards during the reception and award ceremony on Friday, May 18.

Meeting of the Minds Students Research Symposium – Thursday, May 17 at SMSU

  • 8:30–9 a.m. – registration – Events Center;
  • 9–9:30 a.m. – opening remarks – Events Center A;
  • 9:30–11 a.m. – Poster Presentation & Art Exhibits – Events Center BC;
  • 11 a.m.–noon – luncheon and keynote speaker – Events Center A; and
  • Noon–4:20 p.m. – student presentations – Fourplex 215-218.

Recognition of Student Researchers Luncheon – Friday, May 18, at the Yasuda Center

  • Noon–12:30 p.m. – registration;
  • 12:30–12:40 p.m. – welcome remarks, Dorota Huizinga, associate provost for Academic research and dean of Graduate Studies;
  • 12:40–12:55 p.m. – Khanh Luu, “Life on the Rocks: How minerals serve as tape recorders for early Earth history;”
  • 1–1:10 p.m. – theatrical performance;
  • 1:10–1:30 p.m. – CSUSB Student Research Competition Recognition;
  • 1:30–1:50 p.m. – award ceremony; and
  • 1:50–2 p.m. – closing remarks, Christina Hassija, assistant professor of psychology.

The event is free and open to the public. You can register and print your ticket on the Meeting of the Minds website at Eventbrite. All participants presenting do not need a ticket. CSUSB parking is $6.
