Submissions

The student editorial board of History in the Making, A Journal of History invites undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni to submit primary source based scholarly papers related to the field of history for review. We welcome research papers, portions of senior or master's theses, historiographical essays, scholarly book reviews, public history exhibit reviews, historical film reviews, photographic essays, original artwork for the cover, archive reviews, and edited oral histories from all students, regardless of major course of study.

History in the Making is an award-winning annual publication of the California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) Alpha Delta Nu Chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society and is sponsored by the History Department and Instructionally Related Programs at CSUSB. Issues are published at the end of the spring semester online and in print. The journal is student-reviewed and edited.

Authors interested in submitting an article should expect to submit their work by early January of each year to be included in the annual volume which is published in the Spring.

Call for Papers

The editorial board is now collecting submissions for Volume 18 (2025).  

Please submit:

  • Original historical research papers
  • Exhibition reviews
  • Edited oral histories
  • Historiographical essays
  • Scholarly book reviews
  • Travel essays
  • Photographic essay proposals

We are looking for a broad range of papers on historical topics for the upcoming volume.  We are especially interested in original, primary-source based research papers that explore any historical topic.
Students who have written papers for HIST 5940 or honors papers are encouraged to submit their papers.

To submit a manuscript

Provide a complete version of the paper with all references to the identity of the author removed. Students should submit articles electronically to Dr. Tiffany Jones at tjones@csusb.edu with the subject line: “Journal Submission.”  Please include in your email your year of study (e.g. freshman, junior, sophomore, senior) or if CSUSB Alumni, the date the piece was written. Also include your best contact information.

All submissions should be in Microsoft Word® or Rich Text Format. Submissions will be reviewed anonymously by a board of student editors and accepted or rejected based on academic standards of scholarly contribution and strength of research, adherence to submission guidelines, and the needs of the journal.

Papers need to be thematically concentrated in the discipline of history and based on original research. Articles must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere at the time of submission. Footnotes and bibliographies should be formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style.

To submit a manuscript in person

Please drop off a hard copy at the history department attention Dr. Tiffany Jones.  Authors will also need to provide an electronic complete version of the paper with all references to the identity of the author removed. All submissions should be in Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format.
