San Bernardino Shooting: Emotional Vigils Mourn the Victims
'As a member of the Muslim community, I address you tonight with a heavy heart to remember all of those who passed last week in a tragic massacre sadly committed by one of our own graduates and sadly maybe one of my students,' Dany Doueiri, an associate professor in the university's Center for Islamic and Middle East Studies, said in a voice choked with emotion. Cal State San Bernardino vigil offers message of hope
“On this year, the 50th anniversary of Cal State San Bernardino, I wish that we had gathered to celebrate instead of mourn, to smile instead of to weep, to plan our future instead of (reflecting) on our tragic past,” Doueiri said.
A message from CSMAW regarding the San Bernardino massacre
As the Center for the Study of Muslim and Arab Worlds (CSMAW), we extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the recent horrific tragedy, which has shaken our community to its very core. We mourn deeply the loss of precious and innocent lives from our community and stand firm and united in condemning all forms of violence and terrorism, regardless of the originating ideology. Terrorism is not justified by any religion. As a part of our mission, we are dedicated to enhancing knowledge about the history, culture, politics, religions and languages of the Middle Eastern and Islamic world. We reach out to the community to offer our expertise and assistance to those who want to have a better grasp of the current politics and developments in the Middle East and the Islamic world.
In fact, in October CIMES hosted Nobel Peace laureate Shirin Ebadi who delivered a talk on how to fight violent fundamentalism; she addressed ISIL --also referred to as Daesh in the region-- and its ideology to an audience of 600 students and community members on our California State University at San Bernardino campus. We will have similar events in the near future in order to address violent and extremist groups that terrorize not just the Middle East and the United States but the entire world. We will also host events that will highlight the voices and struggles of the Middle East through lectures, literature and poetry readings, and music.
We believe in the power of education to expose misinformation and prejudice, as well as to help us heal as a community.
