Student Affairs Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Cal State San Bernardino kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month on Sept. 12 with the AfroLatinX Carnival, featuring renowned headliner Las Cafeteras. This year, CSUSB student organizations, departments, and committees will host events that celebrate the culture, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. Many events will focus on the intersectionality among the Afrolatiné culture and community. The festivities will take place virtually and in-person at the San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses. The events will feature art, live music and entertainment, food, and university and community resources. Student Affairs is proud to participate in the celebration by hosting and collaborating on events with campus partners.

“Hispanic Heritage Month provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, contributions, and histories of Hispanic and Latinx communities, as well as a platform for education and advocacy,” said Avisinia Rodriguez, interim Assistant Dean of Student Engagement and co-chair of Hispanic Heritage Month. “Events at the Palm Desert and San Bernardino campuses enrich the student experience and promote cultural understanding among students, faculty, and staff.”

She added, “I am a firm believer in representation, and these types of programs and events help create an inclusive environment and foster a sense of belonging.”

Latinx is an inclusive term to encompass all genders represented in the Latin community in addition to individuals who identify as Latina/Latino. As a federally-designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, Cal State San Bernardino takes great pride in celebrating the many contributions of our Hispanic and Latinx students, faculty, and staff.

"By celebrating this Hispanic Heritage, we honor the unique threads that contribute to the tapestry of our collective history and affirm the principles of unity that bind us as a society," said Jesse Felix, Director of the Santos Manuel Student Union and co-chair of Hispanic Heritage Month.
