Get to Know Graduate Student Elmer Gutierrez

Elmer Gutierrez

Elmer Gutierrez is a Graduate Student employee for operations and risk management at The Recreation and Wellness Department, where he has worked for four years.

In his role, Elmer assists with day-to-day operations, such as scheduling student development trainings for the operation managers’ teams. He is also in charge of teaching first aid and CPR/AED certification classes and conducting emergency practice drills for The Recreation and Wellness Department staff.

In addition, Elmer chairs the Recreation and Wellness committee, which is a subcommittee of the Santos Manuel Student Union board of directors and serves as an advisory group to The Recreation and Wellness Department. The committee advises on policy, budgets, proposals, and operations of the activities and programs of The Recreation and Wellness Department.

Elmer is currently in his first year in the Biology graduate program at CSUSB. He believes the hands-on experiences he has gained while working at The Recreation and Wellness Department will benefit him after college.

“As I've worked here at the Rec, I'm in charge of CPR classes, so I teach classes, and through that, I found out I enjoy teaching,” said Elmer. “Academia could be an option after my graduate program.”

One of the best parts about his role at The Recreation and Wellness Department are the connections he has established over the years.

“I've developed really great friendships with not only my peers but also some of the [professional] staff as well,” said Elmer. “Being able to come into work and know that it's always a welcoming environment, I think is the best thing.”
