Overview

The demand for teachers proficient in computer science education is surging. Equip yourself to be at the forefront of this paradigm shift in K-12 education and prepare your students with essential skills they will need to thrive in the future work force. By integrating essential computer science skills into your curriculum, you can uncover talents and capabilities in your students, setting them on a path to college and vocational success.

The program offers two pathways to obtain supplementary authorization in computer science and will authorize the holder to teach the supplementary subject matter content typically included in curriculum guidelines and textbooks for study in grades K-12.

Introductory Supplementary Authorization in Computer Science

  • Prepares teachers to provide computer science instruction in K-9 grades.
  • Add to Single Subject, Standard Secondary, Special Secondary (in academic subject areas only), Multiple Subject or Standard Elementary teaching credentials.
  • Duration: 12 units over 3 semesters

Specific Supplementary Authorization in Computer Science

  • Enables teachers to deliver computer science teaching in grades K-12 and adult classes.
  • Add to Single Subject, Standard Secondary and Special Secondary (academic subject areas only) teaching credentials.
  • Duration: 12 units over 3 semesters

These tracks provide students with the necessary coursework for supplementary authorization in computer science. The supplementary authorization is awarded and administered by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Applications for adding supplementary authorization content areas to a credential may be submitted to the Commission by mail including the following items:

  • A completed application (form 41-4).
  • Official transcripts verifying qualifying degree major or coursework completed. You may be required to submit photocopies of the catalog course descriptions or a course syllabus if the content of any course you wish to use to qualify for a supplementary authorization is not clear from the course title.
  • Application processing fee.
