What advice would you give to new transfer students coming to CSUSB?
Talk to your professors, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and find some form of activity to participate in on campus. The university is going to seem harder but talking to those who are in charge of your classes and grades can help make the transition smoother. On top of everything try to enjoy it. Stress less and take in the whole college experience.
Why are you proud to be a transfer student? Provide highlights of your college career so far.
Getting to this point in my life has been hard. I graduated high school in 2012 and immediately went to Barstow Community College. I then took a few gap years and decided it was time to go back. I started at SBVC in 2018 and graduated with two associates degrees.Transferring to CSUSB has been a huge accomplishment for my goal to become a Data Scientist. I’m really proud all around to be a transfer student and to be where I am with grades and GPA.
What was the most challenging part of being a transfer student? How did you overcome it?
The most challenging part is the jump from lower division Community College classes to upper division university classes. It has taken a lot more studying and a lot more hard work but I’ve put in the time and I am proud to say the majority if not all my classes are going really well!
What were your reasons for transferring? Have you achieved your objectives?
My reason for transferring was so I can provide a better life for my daughter and me. I want to become a Data Scientist and that requires at least a BS so this is putting me on the right track for being able to provide without struggle.
How has CSUSB helped you attain your academic and personal goals as a transfer student?
CSUSB helps me everyday in different ways. I credit my success to my professors who will take time out of their day in order to help me with the silliest of questions. They also take the time to meet with me one on one (virtually of course) to ensure I have a firm grasp on the information at hand. I’ve always been a student who shoots for an A and they encourage it.
What is the best part of being a transfer student? What makes transfer students special?
The best part of being a transfer student is that I have had a less stressful first two years. I was able to complete my general education and 90% of my lower division requirements before making it to the university level where everything feels 100 times more competitive. Transfer students are special because we have seen not only the university side of things but we can also sympathize with those who go to a community college to save money or knock classes out before coming to a university. We are able to do a lot more than we ever thought we could.
