Cal State San Bernardino alumna Roxanne Escatel has once again been recognized for her contributions to the animation industry, earning a prestigious Emmy nomination from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Escatel, who graduated in 2007 with a degree in communications from CSUSB’s College of Arts and Letters, is a nominee for the 2023-24 Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in the category of Outstanding Casting for an Animated Series for her work on “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” The awards ceremony will take place on March 15 in Los Angeles.
This marks Escatel’s second Emmy nomination, following her 2021-22 nod in the same category for the Nickelodeon series, “Big Nate.”
Escatel’s journey in media began at CSUSB’s Coyote Radio, where she credits mentor Lacey Kendall, lecturer and longtime radio personality, for helping her launch her career.
“My start into media communications began with Lacey Kendall,” Escatel said. “She took a chance on me and took me under her wings to help work at Coyote Radio when I was in my senior year. She even let me play EDM music at 8 a.m. and would lovingly joke with me, calling it the ‘beep-bop hour.’ She was an incredible mentor and any student who can learn from her has an invaluable support system filled with decades of knowledge.”
Of Escatel, Kendall said, “Roxanne arrived early, was fully engaged and always eager to learn skills that would help her career. Roxanne made the most of every opportunity at Coyote Radio! I’ve loved watching her get everything she was aiming for!”
Escatel’s internship at Coyote Radio helped her land a position at Nickelodeon Animation Studios, where she worked as a production assistant intern on the hit animated series “The Fairly Odd Parents.”
Since joining Nickelodeon, Escatel has steadily advanced in the field of animation casting, holding roles including senior casting assistant, manager of animation casting and talent relations, and director of animation casting and talent relations. She now serves as the vice president of animation casting and talent relations, where she plays a pivotal role in discovering and casting voice talent for major animated projects.
As Escatel awaits the results of her latest Emmy nomination, she continues to be a shining example of the opportunities available to CSUSB students pursuing careers in media and entertainment.
