Students, faculty, staff and visitors who use the University Parkway-Interstate 215 interchange to reach the Cal State San Bernardino campus are reminded that construction work continues in that area and to allow for extra travel time. Plan on using alternate routes to avoid delays due to traffic.

In January, construction on the I-215 University Parkway Interchange project continues with crews working behind concrete barriers (k-rails). Work includes the installation of temporary poles and placement of concrete on the southbound on- and off-ramps of the freeway. Lanes between the on- and off-ramps on University Parkway will be narrowed to allow for work to occur on the street.

Also, transportation officials say there will be intermittent overnight closures of the University Parkway on- and off-ramps that will take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday-Friday. Detour routes will be posted. For most commuters, the best option to access I-215 will be at Palm Avenue. Though University Parkway will remain open, lanes on the street may be intermittently closed where it intersects with the freeway.

The work is being done by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) and the city of San Bernardino, in cooperation with Caltrans District 8, and is aimed at decreasing traffic congestion, reducing delays and improving freeway access to Interstate 215 at University Parkway. The estimated completion date is October 2025.

While the project will reconfigure the existing interchange at I-215 and University Parkway to address present congestion and heavy traffic movement to and from the CSUSB campus, during construction, traffic delays are expected.

According to the SBCTA, construction activities may include pavement work, traffic shifts and nighttime lane and ramp closures. During the construction, it is important to be aware and use caution throughout the corridor as workers and heavy equipment will be present.

The SBCTA recommends allowing extra time to reach your destination as delays may occur.

A regular construction alert will be available to inform commuters of how to manage detours and/or closures within the corridor, as well as when and where they will occur.

To receive more information and to sign up for the construction alert, visit the SCBTA Plan. Build. Move webpage. Also, follow the Caltrans8 Instagram page for updates.

More information about funding, planning, design and construction can be found at the SBCTA website for the I-215 University Parkway project.

The SBCTA team is available by phone (877-55-SBCTA) or email (info@goSBCTA.com) and is committed to responding within 24 hours. On campus, you may also email Jennifer Sorenson, senior associate vice president for Facilities Planning & Management, at Jennifer.Sorenson@csusb.edu.
