With work set to begin on Monday, Nov. 25, students, faculty, staff and visitors who use the University Parkway-Interstate 215 interchange to reach the Cal State San Bernardino campus should begin to find alternate routes to the university.
Crews will begin preliminary work beginning on Nov. 25 that includes surveying, installation of concrete barriers and construction signage, temporary roadway striping, removal of pavement and curbs, along with brush and other vegetation.
Also, night closures at the interchange are planned for Dec. 2-6, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. (reopening at 6 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7). The on- and off-ramps from southbound I-215 will be closed, and there will be intermittent lane closures on University Parkway between the on- and off-ramps.
The work is being done by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) and the city of San Bernardino, in cooperation with Caltrans District 8, and is aimed at decreasing traffic congestion, reducing delays and improving freeway access to Interstate 215 at University Parkway. The estimated completion date is October 2025.
While the project will reconfigure the existing interchange at I-215 and University Parkway to address present congestion and heavy traffic movement to and from the CSUSB campus, during construction, traffic delays are expected.
According to the SBCTA, construction activities may include pavement work, traffic shifts and nighttime lane and ramp closures. During the construction, it is important to be aware and use caution throughout the corridor as workers and heavy equipment will be present.
The SBCTA recommends allowing extra time to reach your destination as delays may occur.
A regular construction alert will be available to inform commuters of how to manage detours and/or closures within the corridor and when and where they will occur.
To receive more information and to sign up for the construction alert, visit the SCBTA Plan. Build. Move webpage when construction begins. Also follow the Caltrans8 Instagram page for updates.
More information about funding, planning, design and construction can be found at the SBCTA website for the I-215 University Parkway project.
The SBCTA team is available by phone (877-55-SBCTA) or email (info@goSBCTA.com) and is committed to responding within 24 hours. On campus, you may also email Jennifer Sorenson, senior associate vice president for Facilities Planning & Management, at Jennifer.Sorenson@csusb.edu.
