Future Mountain Lab: RWUSD and Cal State San Bernardino
Mountain News
Nov. 20, 2024
Jennifer Alford (geography and environmental studies, director of the CSUSB Institute for Watershed Resiliency) was one of the participants at a Nov. 13 meeting to discuss the proposed Mountain Lab Project with Rim of the World Unified School District officials, Cal State San Bernardino alumni and community leaders. The objective the meeting, according to the program, was to “bridge environmental monitoring needs (i.e water, air, vegetation, wildlife, recreation, etc.) across the San Bernardino Mountains with K-12, higher education, professional development and community service activities.”
“The CSUSB Institute for Watershed Resiliency is very exciting to evolve partnerships and collaborations across education and research so that we understand and document the ecological assets of the San Bernardino Mountains and adjacent foothill communities,” Alford said. “Through diverse partnerships, the Mountain Lab will establish a knowledge and learning hub that spans early childhood to professional and public education, collectively helping us to better protect the places we all love for generations to come.”
Committee seeks proposals for Second Annual Inland Empire History Conference
IE Community News
Nov. 20, 2024
Marc Arsell Robinson (history) and José Muñoz (sociology) announced that the organizing committee for the Inland Empire (IE) People’s History Conference is currently seeking proposals for its second annual conference, which will take place on May 3 on the campus of California State University, San Bernardino. Robinson and Muñoz are co-organizers of the conference.
Scholars, students, and community members from across the IE and beyond are invited to submit proposals. All subjects and academic disciplines are eligible to participate. Proposals may be submitted online at the I.E. People’s History Call for Abstracts 2025 webpage.
“We want the conference to bring together people doing a variety of research, analysis, and creative work on the IE,” Muñoz said. “We welcome traditional academic research, but we also want to include college students, K-12 educators, artists, poets, scientists, community activists, practitioners, independent researchers, and other members of the community.”
“This conference works to challenge common assumptions, and tendencies in scholarship, that overlook the Inland Empire,” Robinson said. “Often, Los Angeles and Orange County are studied and celebrated, but the IE also deserves attention for its unique history and contemporary characteristics. The IE is more than merely an extension of LA, and it deserves the attention of writers, researchers and creatives.”
