The Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE) at Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB), in partnership with the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP), hosted the UpStarters Discovery Camp from July 21-25. This innovative camp welcomed approximately 80 high school students to CSUSB’s campus for an immersive week of instruction and experiential learning. The students not only got a taste of the university’s globally recognized entrepreneurship program, but they also gained a sense of what college life is like.
The UpStarters Discover Camp was designed to give students a comprehensive introduction into the world of entrepreneurship. Over 20 hours of sessions, workshops and projects provided deep entrepreneurial insights, encouraging active participation and hands-on learning. The camp emphasized developing a strategic, opportunity-seeking mindset, essential for any budding entrepreneur.
Students connected with CSUSB's entrepreneurship students, faculty and a network of alumni and professionals, fostering valuable relationships and mentorships. The five-day, four-night camp offered students a glimpse into campus life, including staying in the dorms and exploring university facilities. Participation in the camp allowed students to showcase their proactive involvement and passion for innovation, adding a significant credential to their academic and extracurricular profiles.
The camp's curriculum focused on the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, aiming to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to kickstart their entrepreneurial journeys. The emphasis on how to Think Like An Owner!™ encouraged students to adopt a strategic and opportunity-focused approach as they developed their own ideas for a startup business.
Campers had the chance to meet and engage with successful local entrepreneurs, gaining firsthand insights into the entrepreneurial landscape. Workshops on problem-solving and creativity helped students understand where ideas come from and how to innovate effectively. Understanding the power of customer feedback and how to vet ideas were crucial components of the curriculum. Students learned about different startup models and how to identify the best fit for their ventures. Identifying and leveraging the right resources for their startups was a key focus, and experienced entrepreneurs shared common pitfalls and how to avoid them.
The UpStarters Discovery Camp provided a transformative experience for high school students, allowing them to explore entrepreneurship, develop essential skills, and experience college life at CSUSB. The camp not only ignited their entrepreneurial spirit but also equipped them with the tools and mindset necessary to pursue their dreams.
