CSUSB professor comments on Texas Republicans refusing to condemn Allen shooter’s extremist beliefs
Texas Observer
June 6, 2023
Brian Levin, director of CSUSB’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, was interviewed for an article about the lack of public statements by elected Texas Republican officials condemning the hateful extremist beliefs of the man suspected in the Allen, Texas, outlet mall mass shooting in May.
“I think if we substitute Muslim, undocumented, or some other sort of adjective, many of these politicians would leave skid marks in their haste to offer condemnation,” said Levin.
“What makes this silence particularly sad is that there has been a tradition of Texans, including both President George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, using their influence to push back against hate,” Levin told the Observer.
Report: Even as militias disbanded, anti-government groups surged in U.S.
VOA News
June 7, 2023
Brian Levin, director of CSUSB’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, commented on a new report by the Southern Poverty Law Center on the growth of anti-government extremist organizations, even as some militias and hate groups declined. Levin said the SPLC report's most "disturbing finding" was the "continued vibrancy of antigovernment groups."
"In a highly charged and politically divided atmosphere, anti-government vitriol and conspiracies are an easier initial 'gateway' sell than the more blatant xenophobic and racist propaganda of adjacent extremists," Levin said.
