A recent article co-written by Meredith Conroy, CSUSB assistant professor of political science, on the barriers women face in running for legislative office in most states was cited in the newspaper’s article on how Utah can be more election friendly for women.
In their article for the website FiveThirtyEight, Conroy and journalist Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux argue that multimember districts could be a “simple trick” to balancing state legislatures and executive offices in a country that still elects three times more men than women.

CSUSB professor writes on symbolism of Ethiopia’s Unity Park and the nation’s future

Alemayehu G. Mariam, CSUSB professor of political science, emeritus, using the symbolism of Unity Park in Ethiopia’s capital of Addis Ababa, wrote about the transformation of country, whose “Ethiopia’s global image has changed from warmaker to peacemaker. Ethiopia today has a leader lionized as a ‘champion of peace.’
“Ethiopia today is the brightest star in the African constellation. Ethiopia is the New Spirit of Africa not only in the air but also on land.
“Unity Park is just the first step in Ethiopia’s rise to a glorious brave new future of peace, unity, opportunity and prosperity.”
