About 20 Cal State San Bernardino students will be at the City Mission in Highland on Saturday, Jan. 21, packing food for needy families, hygiene kits for the homeless, and helping to prepare meals as part of the university’s volunteer service.

The volunteers, ranging from graduate students, undergraduates and students from the university’s Palm Desert Campus, will also work with City Mission volunteers to organize different parts of the facility, said Bryant Fairley, assistant director of the CSUSB Office of Community Engagement, which is coordinating the university’s volunteer efforts.

The students will also be going to the Louisiana cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge over spring break as part of the TRACKS program, a collaboration of Associated Students Inc., the Student Recreation and Wellness Department and the Office of Community Engagement, Fairley said.

The spring break trip marks the second time students have gone to New Orleans to help needy families, Fairley said. The trip also includes visiting Baton Rouge to help repair and rebuild homes of teachers victimized by flooding, Fairley said.
