Three students from Cal State San Bernardino and their adviser attended the 13th Annual Student African American Brotherhood National Conference, “From Ideas to Action: Saving Tomorrow, Today!” held recently in Detroit, Mich.
The SAAB national headquarters annually hosts a male-oriented conference with messages of success aimed to inspire and mentor young men of color across the United States. SAAB conferences are events intended to reach middle and high school/college and university students.
Featured speakers at the April 7 and 8 conference included SAAB founder and CEO Tyrone Bledsoe, and representatives from the Kellogg Foundation, the Kresge Foundation, US Bank, General Motors.
“The students were able to gain a better understanding of SAAB on the national level, participate in helpful workshops, network with different SAAB chapters across the country, and lastly build a brotherhood amongst one another,” said Brandon Landrum, a 2015 CSUSB graduate and currently an admissions counselor for the university. “We really enjoyed our life-changing experience at this year’s conference.”
CSUSB students attending the conference were Derick Prince, sophomore sociology major; John Smith, sophomore psychology major; and Matthew Foster, sophomore computer engineering major.
SAAB was founded in 1990 at Georgia Southwestern State University, and has grown to more than 200 chapters on college and university campuses, and at middle and high school campuses in more than 39 states across the country. SAAB operates through student chapters, where young men of color participate in social, cultural and spiritual enrichment. SAAB increases the number of young men graduating from college by creating a positive peer community based on a spirit of caring.
