The annual musical event, Piano Day, which celebrates piano students in both solo and collaborative works, will take place at Cal State San Bernardino’s Music Recital Hall on Saturday, May 19.

The day will feature a workshop open to those with a background in piano from 3-5 p.m. and an evening concert that is open to the public starting at 7 p.m. Parking at CSUSB is $6.

During the workshop, musicians will play piano with professionals and ensembles from CSUSB, Cal State Long Beach and Pasadena City College. Valentina Wen-Ting Huang, CSUSB piano professor and director of keyboard studies; Alastair Edmonstone, CSUSB collaborative pianist; and Phillip Young, director of the Center for the Arts at Pasadena City College, will guide the two-hour workshop.

Participants will be grouped in small ensembles of piano four-hands (groups of two), six-hands (groups of three) and eight-hands (groups of four) pieces or placed in a large ensemble of 16 keyboards. The workshop will conclude with a masterclass.

“In the masterclass, Dr. Young will discuss aspects, principles and techniques of ensemble playing,” said Huang. “It will be one-of-a-kind jamming session with lots of insights and fun.”

An evening concert will follow the workshop, featuring piano and mixed instrument ensembles of students from not only CSUSB, but also Cal State Long Beach and Pasadena City College, which have established a long history of piano ensemble programs and have earned a reputed name for it, said Huang. “You don’t want to miss this wonderful opportunity to listen to these students’ performances!” she said.

Registration for the workshop is required by Wednesday, May 16. Email Valentina Wen-Ting Huang at Wen-Ting.Huang@csusb.edu to register. Seating is limited.

Tickets for the concert can be purchased on the music department’s webpage or at the Music Box Office (PA 145). Combo tickets for both the workshop and concert are $10. Tickets for only the concert are $5 for students and $7 for general admission.
