Preventing violence against all women and girls,, and the role men can play in prevention, will be the topic of a talk by renowned activist and humanitarian Tony Porter at Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Porter’s talk, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the university’s Coussoulis Arena from 6-8 p.m. The event is also one of the options for CSUSB students to fulfill the university’s mandatory academic year requirements for sexual violence awareness training. Students are encouraged to attend and bring their Coyote student identification so it can be scanned for credit, said Cristina Martin, director of the university’s Title IX and Gender Equity office.

Porter is an author, educator and activist working to advance social justice issues. He is internationally recognized for his efforts to prevent violence against women while promoting a healthy, respectful manhood. He is a leading voice on male socialization, the intersection of masculinity and violence against women, and healthy, respectful manhood. Tony’s 2010 TED Talk has been named by GQ Magazine as one of the “Top 10 TED Talks Every Man Should See.”

Porter is the co-founder of A CALL TO MEN, a leading violence prevention organization that educates men all over the world on healthy, respectful manhood. Its aim is to shift social norms that negatively impact society and promote a more healthy and respectful definition of manhood.

Porter is the author of “Breaking Out of the Man Box” and the visionary for “NFL Dads: Dedicated to Daughters.” He is an adviser to the National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and Major League Baseball, providing policy consultation, working extensively with player engagement, and facilitating violence prevention and healthy manhood training.

He is an international lecturer for the U.S. State Department, having extensive global experience in Brazil, India and Africa, and has been a guest presenter to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Tony has worked with the United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.

He is sought after for his in-depth understanding of the collective socialization of men, and has served as a script consultant for the Emmy Award-winning television series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
