Cal State San Bernardino is well represented in the nominees for the annual Inland Empire Media Awards – several CSUSB students, staff members and various programs are among the 80 finalists named who will compete for awards in 18 different categories at the event on Thursday, Oct. 15.

Sponsored and hosted this year by the Inland Empire chapter of the American Advertising Federation, the finalists are selected based on their service to the industry and the community.

The CSUSB finalists represent the largest number from any other media company or higher education institution. The three students nominated for Best Student Media Representative include two from CSUSB’s College of Arts and Letters and one from the College of Business and Public Administration.

They include Amanda Fernandez of Rancho Cucamonga, a communication studies-public relations major; Mathew Ornelas of Hesperia, a mass communication major; and Kevin Ruiz of Riverside, a sports and entertainment marketing major.

CSUSB’s Coyote Radio and the Local Matters news program are finalists in the category of Best College Media Outlet.

CSUSB staff members named as finalists are Lacey Kendall of Twin Peaks and Jacob Poore of Corona. Kendall manages the Coyote Radio program at CSUSB and is an on-air personality at KCAL FM. She has been a broadcaster, media manager and media educator in Southern California for more than 30 years. She is a finalist in the category of Media Talent of the Year.

Poore, manager of Coyote Advertising and a former president of the American Advertising Federation, is a finalist for Media Professional of the Year.

“We have such impressive media talent among our students and staff, but even more so, that service and community are so important to them,” said Terry Ballman, dean of the College of Arts and Letters.

The AAF-IE Inland Empire Media Awards Gala will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. at the historic Mission Inn in Riverside, where the winners will be announced. Tickets are currently on sale for those interested in attending.
