Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus will be closed on Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day.

Both campuses will reopen on Tuesday, May 31. University Police will remain on duty on all days when the campus is closed.

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May each year. The holiday was originally called Decoration Day due to the practice of decorating the graves of soldiers in remembrance of their sacrifice while serving in the nation’s armed services.

One of the first official Memorial Day proclamations was made in 1868 by Gen. John Logan, who was serving as commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. This began the tradition of placing flowers on the graves of all the Union and Confederate service members at Arlington National Cemetery.

The spring quarter will continue through the middle of June. Finals for students are scheduled June 14-17.

Commencement ceremonies for graduates are scheduled for Thursday, June 16, at The Show at the Agua Caliente Casino for the Palm Desert Campus, followed by Saturday, June 18, at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario. Visit the CSUSB Commencement website at for more information.
