California State University, San Bernardino senior Saxxie Tran has been awarded a California State University (CSU) Trustees’ 2018 Award for Outstanding Achievement. The CSU’s highest recognition of student attainment, Tran has been named a Trustee Peter J. and Coralyn A. Taylor Scholar. Only one student from each of the system’s 23 campuses was selected for this honor. “Students are selected for their exceptional efforts in the classroom and community,” the CSU said. “Awardees demonstrate superior academic performance, personal accomplishments, community service and financial need. Many have shown inspirational resolve along the path to college success and are the first in their families to attend college.”Determination has been a common theme throughout Tran’s educational experience. From college rejections and initially being denied admission to her nursing program, she has persevered, inspiring those around her. “My experience has taught me that failure is an avenue for growth and should not be something to fear, but rather, to embrace,” she stated. Tran graduates this December from Cal State San Bernardino with a bachelor of science degree in nursing and a certificate in health equity and disparities. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and maintains an overall 3.8 GPA. Her letters of recommendation highlight her role as a mentor to her fellow nursing students. She not only served as a member of the Student Mentoring Program, but also founded the Pre-Nursing Student Organization and served as president during its inaugural year.Tran’s passion and dedication led her to serve more than 400 volunteer hours as an orientation leader and coordinator in Seattle and as a health coach for the San Antonio Regional Hospital Community Health Improvement Program.
